North Tyneside Steam

In 2014 Gary was commissioned by Northern Voices Community Projects to write a song for 'North Tyneside Steam', a book published to mark the bicentenary of George Stephenson's steam engine Blücher, which tells the story of its creator in Killingworth and North Tyneside and of steam railways in the area. The book was compiled and edited by Dr Keith Armstrong & Peter Dixon. With historical documents and images, alongside poems, songs, stories, photographs and drawings by local people, it is intended to ensure that the story of steam in North Tyneside is not forgotten.

Gary had previously been commissioned to write a song about the steam train legacy of North East England, when he was commissioned by Northern Sky Music in 2000 to write a song, 'Full Circle' for 'A Full Head of Steam'. For this particular project Gary's contribution was a song called 'Blücher'.

On Monday 8th September 2014, Gary took part in the 'North Tyneside Steam' Book Launch at the White Swan Centre, Killingworth, Tyne and Wear; performing acoustic solo versions of 'Blücher' and 'Full Circle'.
